Classification:

Polytomella  Aragão, 1910;  all 9 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Chlamydomonadales;  Family Dunaliellaceae

Morphology:

Quadriflagellate colorless unicells, no cellulose cell walls.  Stigma and other stigma-like granules often present.  Two to four apical contractile vacuoles.  Isogamous,fusion creates a planozygoe (flagellated) that undergoes meosis eventually forming four flagellated cells (Ibid.).

Habitat:

Widely distributed in freshwater.
